Marks of a False Teacher

wolf_in_sheeps_clothingNumerous New Testament passages warn believers of false teachers who are already in the church or who are yet to come.  We would be wise to review their characteristics.

===============================================

*False teachers will come in the name of Christ and mislead many.  (Matt. 24:4-5,11)

*They will arrive after Jesus departs, being savage wolves among Christians, speaking perverse things in order to draw us away.  (Acts 20:29-30)

*Present a different, distorted gospel. (Gal. 1:6-7)

*Paul calls them “dogs” and “evil workers” who teach a”false circumcision“.  (Philippians 3:2)

*They will attempt to “delude you with persuasive arguments” captivating us “‘through philosophy and empty deception according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.”  (Col. 2:4,8)

*Some will “defraud you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of angels, taking his stand of visions he has seen….” (Col. 2:18)

*These people will want you to “submit yourself to decrees, such as, ‘Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!‘”  (Col. 2:20-21)

*They will try to teach strange doctrines, myths, and endless geneologies.  (1Tim. 1:3-4)

*Some may pay “attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons;” will “forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods…”  (1Tim. 4:3)

*”Lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding a form of godliness, although they have denied its power.”  (2Tim.3:2-5)

*These people are “always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth,” and also “oppose the truth .”(2Tim. 3:7,8)

*In the last hours, these false teachers “went out from us, but they were not really of us.”  (1John 2:19)

*They are liars denying that Jesus is the Christ making them an antichrist.  (1 John 2:22)

*There will be “many deceivers” who “have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh.” (2John 7)

*These “certain persons have crept in unnoticed…ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.” (Jude 4)

==================

Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward.  Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.  If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.”  (2 John 8-11)

  1. can you tell me if you have any information (Christian apologetics) on yoga?

  2. Welcome, Mary Beth!

I will be happy to send you some information on yoga. I’ll email you some…

  3. A couple years back, my beloved wife asked me about taking Yoga classes at the local YMCA. I referred her to this site and the Lord gave her wisdom to understand the evil danger lurking therein. http://www.lighthousetrailsresearch.com/search/search.php?zoom_sort=0&zoom_query=yoga&zoom_per_page=10&zoom_and=0

    • That’s awesome! Praise the Lord!

      Thank you for sharing that!

  4. *”Lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding a form of godliness, although they have denied its power.”

Sounds like Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and the rest of Republican apostates to me. Any wonder the Ronald Regan consulted with his horoscope?

Jesus has a message to Republican apostates, “REPENT FOR KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND.”

  5. Jesus Follower,

I am certain that Jesus’ message of repentance is offered to Democrats, Independents, Libertarians, as well as to those who claim no political affiliation.

    Wouldn’t you agree?

    ~Yvonne

    • Repentance means change of lifestyle not just change of what you say. You can’t “repent” and then continue a lifestyle contrary to the word of GOD and I’m sorry but the foundational scriptures are not open to interpretation, sorry I know you hate that but it’s true.

      • Welcome, d.ellis,

If I may, I’d like to tweak your definition of repentance to be not a change in lifestyle, but rather a change of heart and mind. Literally, in the Hebrew, it would mean a change of direction, but I think we are in agreement that if one is born again things definitely change, including one’s lifestyle.

May I also suggest that these changes do not all happen at once? I certainly am not the same Christian I was 17 years ago when the Lord saved me. Sanctification is a process that does not culminate until we are in glory with our Savior.

Lastly, I sincerely doubt that you ‘know’ much about me at all, so I would ask that you do not make assumptions about what I hate.

        Thanks for stopping by.

        ~Yvonne

  6. Hello First John Four Five friends! Yvonne?

I’ve been researching the whole social justice ‘gospel’ and Jim Wallis for many months now and there’s SO much information out there I wonder why most Christians don’t know about this threat to the church. Maybe they don’t really want to know? Anyway, I work at the Christian radio station that pulled it’s support from Lifest because of radical leftist Wallis was a speaker there. To not make a very long story longer, here’s my article if you’d like to blog about it sometime, or keep it for future reference. Thanks so much for all you do, God bless you!

Defending False Statements by Jim Wallis against Q90 FM; The Battle Continues Dave Fiorazo, July 16, 2010

I really wanted this to go away but then the Appleton, Wisconsin Post Crescent decided to print my week-old comment today, and Sojourners Jim Wallis posted a blog attacking my employer, Q90 FM. Can I tell you an insider secret? My General Manager had no idea that there was a rift between Glenn Beck and Jim Wallis a few months ago, when Lifest invited the liberal theologian to be a keynote speaker. (This will make sense to you in a minute, I promise!) Christian friends and many listeners to the radio station I work at have been asking for more details on why we disagreed with Jim Wallis speaking at Lifest. (Q90 board of directors statement here; http://www.q90fm.com/lifest2010.asp) I have a fresh, vibrant respect for my superiors because of their decision and the way they handled the entire process, which you’d never know from reading Wallis’s new blog. I can’t tell you how many times people have thanked my GM and the board for using discernment, sensitivity, professionalism, and class – their words – in dealing with this sad situation from the beginning. So by today, I was thinking that we wouldn’t be mentioning Jim Wallis as much anymore and we’d be focusing on the beliefs and doctrines of the social justice and emergent church movements. I was wrong. He just wrote a new ‘God’s Politics’ blog called, “Controversy in Wisconsin”, attacking my boss, the integrity and ministry of Q90 FM.

If you’re hearing about this for the first time, after reading his blog about the Wisconsin trip, you might think that those so-called Christians who treated Jim Wallis and Bob Lenz the way they did were pretty insensitive, hateful, and tactless. But the fact is that I work for Q90 FM and I don’t know who he’s talking about! Wallis just bashed my boss and board of directors but I’m not telling you what to think. Decide for yourself after reading all the facts. I’m not saying he’s a bad person, he’s simply wrong. His blog falsely leads people to believe that it was Q90 who circulated attacks against him, “suggesting that I was a communist, a deceiver, and…an avowed Marxist…” Wallis writes, “Does that sound anything like the language of a certain Fox News talk show host who has recently come after “social justice” Christians and me in particular? Oh no, they insisted, this had nothing to do with Glenn Beck.” (Told you this would make sense) Now, if you read the official statement from Q90, you’ll realize that these things were never said. Insider secret #2 is that we never once mentioned Jim Wallis on the air! I’m probably the most outspoken of our entire staff, and in my personal blog you can read my response to the Lifest speech by Jim Wallis and comments from two readers of an Appleton, Wisconsin Post Crescent article, here; (http://www.facebook.com/notes/dave-fiorazo/jim-wallis-and-the-confusing-controversy/402689322729)

Wallis suggested that Q90 started ‘the firestorm’ but I personally believe that it was the decision to bring Wallis to Lifest that began the whole debate. He also said we threatened to protest and that we intimidated Bob Lenz. Insider secret #3; my boss and Lenz have been good friends for years. I want to point out that though it’s true that a letter was sent to churches attempting to alert Pastors about Wallis coming to Lifest, Q90 had absolutely nothing to do with that letter. Zero, nada, zilch, goose egg. We did not make anything up, issue threats, or go after Bob Lenz personally as stated in the blog. Wallis added that we (or the churches) were spreading lies, stirring up trouble, and that when he generously reached out to my boss in a phone call, he refused dialogue with Wallis. To be clear, insider secret #4 is that they had two very long phone conversations. Wallis writes, “But he refused the dialogue unless the station’s demands for my cancellation were met (sounds like Glenn Beck again).” Seriously? If we have to be compared to anyone, I’m glad it’s Glenn Beck and not Keith Olberman or Joy Behar. It gets better! Wallis flat out lies about Q90 and twists the actual series of events. “This was getting quite silly. But when the wild and fabricated charges they began with all fell flat in face of the facts, they were left with not much of an argument. But they stuck with it and pulled out of the festival.” I think I get it; the conservative Christian radio station taking a stubborn stand for the gospel of Jesus Christ and the integrity of God’s word ‘fabricated charges’ and failed in the end.
    Check please!

You might think I’m making this all this up so here’s the blog link on Sojourners; (http://blog.sojo.net/2010/07/15/controversy-in-wisconsin) Please compare the tone and attitude of Jim Wallis’ blog to the Q90 FM board of directors statement. I’d love to know what you think. To the uninformed, we’re just a bunch of foolish Christians who are overly concerned about false doctrines, teachers, and others who could potentially lead people away from Jesus Christ through deceptive philosophies, environmental, or social agendas. This an attractive and deceptive movement in the church that is dangerous. Wallis then speaks for the majority and triumphantly concludes, “Most seemed to feel that the controversy and protest looked pretty foolish and unnecessary after the event had taken place. Many thanked Bob for standing firm against some pretty nasty attacks and pressure. But if the attackers had succeeded with intimidation to cancel a speaker they didn’t agree with, there is no doubt that the tactics of distortion and intimidation would have been repeated in other places.” I’ll be right back, I have to go to the garage and look for a few shovels. I guess there were a few “local pastors who were very sorry about all this and expressed hope that I would still come back to Wisconsin (I assured them that I loved their state and would love to come back).” I’m relieved, and I hope there will be a fair debate next time instead of a one-sided platform.

Let me emphasize that this is NOT about Q90 FM and Lifest. So what now? Do we just forget about it and pretend it was a glitch in our Summer, or do we research the facts and dig even deeper into Biblical truths? Let’s all read Ephesians 6 again and get that spiritual armor on, grab a sword and take a stand! I used to have a T-shirt that said, “Life is short. Pray hard.” It’s time to get to work, friends. Some Christians may think we’re on a comfortable Cruise ship, but one day they’ll wake up and realize we’re in a Battle ship.

  7. Thank you so much for all the trusted research on this subject. We are very interested in Leonard Sweet and where he fits into this picture of false teachers. Do you have any info on Leonard Sweet? May our Lord continue to empower and protect you and all the staff and their families as you continue to take a stand for the TRUTH! I welcome your response by email.

  8. so what about Mark 9:38-41?

    • Welcome again zero1ghost — what about Mark 9:38-41? Do share your thoughts . . .

  9. “who ever is not against us is for us”

these are Jesus’ words which to me negate Paul’s obsession with “who is in and who is out.” and against the Matthew text. plus, reading the greek, i see that Jesus states in your first Matthew 24 verse to be against those who say “‘I am the Christ” not those “who come in the name of Christ.” if they are not against us, they are for us.

    • After looking at your blog, we do not have anything further to discuss. 2Tim 2:15,16

      • as i figured. you take the words of a “pseudo-Pauline” letter over the words of our Lord and Savior.

  10. [...] Marks of a False Teacher Posted by: Yvonne | March 8, 2011 [...]

  11. Dear Brother Rick,
Today I read several comments on my Facebook page stating that “you are preaching that Islam, Muslim, and Christianity all worship the same Jesus.” I couldn’t believe this, is it true? If it is, on what scripture do you base your facts?

    • Welcome Nona,

I’m a bit confused by your comment. No doubt, Rick is in need of some serious Scripture study.

  12. For more information on false teachers, false prophets, false apostles, and the heresies they teach – please grab a Bible and feel free to visit my Facebook page.

    • Welcome, Shawn~

I visited your FB page and saw that you had liked to our blog. Thanks!

  13. Hello. You probably will not be all that surprised to hear that Rob Bell attended AA as a young pastor and uses the AA theology to promote his book when he was speaking at Vanderbilt University.

    http://mywordlikefire.com/2013/03/21/rob-bell-praises-a-a-spirituality-during-book-tour/

    • No doubt, John, Rob Bell should be marked and avoided! Thanks for the info.

  14. Wow. Where is the love in this?! As one who is entering into ministry, I know I should not care, but I am fearful of this kind of hate. In one not as spiritually mature, your words could deter someone from entering the ministry, even though they are called. I will follow God, do my research, and try to listen to his voice always, but of course I will not be perfect. Do you really think your words are leading people to the truth, by hate? My life has been changed by God through the teachings of Beth Moore. Who are you all to say what is in her heart? You are not in her life, it is not any of your jobs to hold her accountable. Be mindful of your judgement, for whatever measure you judge, so will you be judged. This entire website/cause of yours is sad.

    • Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts.

It is my hope that if you are a Christian then the Holy Spirit will convict you of the fact that one of the most loving thing one can do is speak the truth in love.

If you would spend some time studying the Scriptures on this page you may see that Jesus warned us that false teachers would be in the church and we are to mark and avoid them (Rom 16:17-18).

Next time you would like to comment on this site please refrain from ad hominem attacks.

      Grace and peace,
      ~Yvonne

  15. Kim – biblical love is based on Truth. If there is no truth, there can be no love. What the world calls love is a mere emotional surge that comes and goes.

Nobody can say what’s in Beth Moore’s heart, but her teaching is certainly wretched.

What ministry are you entering into?
