Marks of a False Teacher, Andy Crouch

false-teacherfor they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.” Acts 17:11

We have taken on a very large project and that is critically reviewing Culture Making: Recovering Our Creative Calling by Andy Crouch.

You can read them here, here, and here

These posts are meant as warnings to the body of Christ, to not be deceived by false teachers who propose a false gospel. Paul exhorts the Galatians,

But even if we, or an angel from heaven . . . if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received he is to be accursed!
Galatians 1:8-9

Paul, a teacher of truth, includes himself in this statement. The implication is that no matter the teacher / preacher  or even an angel from heaven delivers a gospel contrary to what we received from Christ, he is to be accursed.

Paul praises the Thessalonians for among other things “examining the Scriptures daily to see  whether these things[the teachings of Paul and Siras] were so.”

The Thessalonians examined the Scriptures with the teachings of Paul and Silas!

However, when we attempted to examine the Scriptures with the teachings of Andy Crouch, he responded with pontifications, hyperbole, and insults.

but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
(Matthew 18: 6)

Christian teachers are held to a higher standard. We know the world will cause believers to stumble but not Christian teachers: (Additional Scriptures that characterize a false teacher)

Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks. For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes. (Matthew 18:7)

The character of a Christian teacher:

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:14-16 (emphasis mine)

Complicated philosophies & ideologies belong to man and need not be the subject matter of Christian teachers:

But avoid worldly and empty chatter for it will lead to further ungodliness and their talk will spread like gangrene . . .
2Timothy 2:16, 17

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching . . . so that the man of God be adedquate, equipped for every good work.
2Timothy 3:16,17 (emphasis mine)

In contrast, Andy could not hold up to being “examined” or scrutinized. As we commented on a series of posts which reviewed the same book by Andy Crouch at Kingdom People, our comments and the responses of Andy Crouch were deleted.

Apparently all sides of a conversation are not welcome at the table.
